Introduction to the prose "On Examination'':

"At Harrow'' is an excerpt from Chapter-Il (Harrow) of Winston S. Churchill's autobiography, A Roving Commission My Early Life (1930). 'On Examination' is a part of it. It records Churchill's experience at Harrow, his fear of examination, his selection to Harrow, his wickedness with friends, and seniors.

Examination is a fear, a tedious job for the truants. Some students have sharp minds and they pay no heed to the examination. But the dull students mean it enough and feel horrified at the prospect of the examination. They lodge a lot of complaints against the teachers, question setters, and examiners.

Churchill, being a young child, had similar complaints against the examiners, question papers, In fact he was good at poetry, history. But the examiners set questions from Latin and mathematics which put Churchill in difficulty, Yet he always enjoyed good luck which came as an aide and he was triumphant everywhere.

On Examination Prose Summary

At the age of 12, the narrator had to appear for examinations to enter Harrow school. He knew that there would be questions in Latin and mathematics papers which he detested strongly. His favourite subjects, history, poetry would not help him in any way. He looked cross. He went to the examination hall. He could not answer a single question in the Latin paper. He wrote down the number of the question 'I' only. Tears rolled from his eyes and drenched the answer paper. The examiners collected his paper and sent it to headmaster, Dr. Welldon. What he understood from it only he knew. He gave him a pass certificate.

The narrator got a seat, but he was placed in the third or lowest division of the bottom. As per the Harrow custom, the students file past a master in the school yard and answer one by one when the roll is called. The narrator's name was towards last. When he appeared, others stared at him as his father Randolph Churchill was the leader of the House of commons and chancellor of the Exchequer, and commented - "Why he's last of all."

The cleverer students were allowed to study Latin and Greek. As the narrator was dull, he was asked to study English. The English teacher Mr. Sowervell was a delightful man. He taught English so easily by dividing and colouring the subject, predicate, object, clauses, brackets that even the stupidest student, after completing Latin and Greek, returned to English class, the narrator challenged them easily.

The narrator went to Harrow in the summer term. There was a river-like pond where the students gather, play mischief at the time of bathing. Oneday the narrator saw a boy standing in a meditative posture wrapped in a towel on the very brink. The narrator came stealthily behind. Pushed him in, holding on to his towel. He fell into the water, came out angrily and dragged him into the water. The writer swam across the pond to the other side. Some other boys were there. They rebuked him, for the boy whom he made naked was senior to him. He was head of his house, champion at Gym and had many titles and fame. The narrator met him and begged pardon saying- you looked small. My father, who is a great man, is also small. SoI played mischief. He forgave him.

The narrator was not completely dull. Once he got a prize reciting to the Headmaster twelve hundred lines of Macaulay "lays of Ancient Rome." He also succeeded in passing the preliminary examination for the Army while many seniors failed to get it. His luck came to his aid in this matter. He thought there would be a question on drawing a map. He memorised the map of New Zealand and the exact question was asked. So he got good marks.
